Garage Door Safety Features Every Homeowner Should Know About

Garage door safety features help protect your family, property, and peace of mind. Garage doors are not only one of the most frequently used moving parts of your home, they are also one of the heaviest. While they offer convenience and security, they can also pose serious risks if not equipped with the right safety features and properly maintained. Understanding how modern garage door systems protect your family, pets, and property is essential for every homeowner. At Ed's Garage Doors, safety isn't an afterthought. Safety is at the forefront of every professional installation, maintenance service, and upgrade our experts provide.

Why Garage Door Safety Matters

Garage doors can weigh hundreds of pounds and operate with great force. According to data from safety surveillance systems, thousands of serious injuries occur each year due to malfunctioning or outdated garage doors. Whether you’re pulling in after a long day or opening the door for curious children and pets, having the right safety features in place protects those you care about most.

Top Garage Door Safety Features Every Homeowner Should Know

Read about the most helpful garage door safety features available for homeowners in Fairfield and Greenwich, CT, features that will ensure you can use your state-of-the-art garage door without issue.

  • Automatic Reverse Mechanism: This feature immediately stops and reverses the direction of a garage door when it detects an obstruction such as a child, pet, or object. This prevents serious injury and protects vehicles and property.
  • Photoelectric Safety Sensors: These are sensors that emit an invisible infrared beam near the base of the garage door on either side. If anything interrupts this beam while the door is closing, the system automatically stops and reverses the door.
  • Manual Release Handle: During power outages or mechanical failure, the manual release handle allows you to disengage the opener and operate the door by hand.
  • Rolling Code Technology: Rolling code technology changes the access code every time the remote is used, improving security against unauthorized entry from code-grabbing devices.
  • Battery Backup Systems: A battery backup system keeps your garage door opener operational even during electrical interruptions. This is especially important when major storms hit.
  • Motion-Activated Lighting: Motion sensors trigger lights inside and outside your garage when movement is detected. This not only improves visibility at night but also helps deter intruders.
  • Pinch-Resistant Panels: Especially important for homes with children, pinch-resistant door panels protect fingers from getting caught between sections as the door moves.

Maintenance Matters: Don’t Skip Regular Checks

Even the best safety features won’t help if they aren’t working properly. Make sure to test safety sensors monthly to ensure they are working properly. This includes checking photoelectric sensor alignment, lubricating moving parts, and inspecting springs, cables, and tracks for wear.

2nd Annual Food Drive to benefit Lower Fairfield County Food Bank on November 23rd Norwalk, CT (November 7, 2013) – On Saturday, November 23, from 10 am - 2 pm, Ed’s Garage Doors at 136 Water Street in South Norwalk will host its 2nd Annual “Operation Turkey: Feeding Fairfield County Families” to help families in need this holiday season. Rich Cunningham, owner and president of Ed’s Garage Doors, established “Operation Turkey” in 2012 after seeing a local news story about the severe shortage of turkeys at local food banks, due in part to recovery efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Cunningham’s goal for 2013 is to surpass last year’s collection of more than 500 turkeys and over 500 pounds of non-perishable food. WEBE108 will be broadcasting live from the event from 10 am - 12 noon, and all attendees who bring a donation will be entered into a special giveaway on-site. “With our donation and generous gifts from our partners at LiftMaster and Northwest Door, we already have a jump start on last year’s collection,” said Cunningham. “And with WEBE108 broadcasting at the event this year, we anticipate increased community attendance and continued enthusiastic support for the cause.” “We’ve been part of the Norwalk community for more than 40 years,” added Cunningham. “We know how generous our neighbors can be, and we’re looking forward to helping The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County as they work to feed families for the holidays again this year.” The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County will have trucks on-site to accept all turkey and canned good donations. Monetary donations will also be accepted. 100% of all donated items will be delivered directly to The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County and will be distributed to “in-need” residents this holiday season.
